Meet the Team

Helen Varma – Appeal Director

Born and raised in East Africa, Helen Varma has a long-founded personal interest in the development of Kenya. Her connection with Starehe goes back to 1996 when she was invited to lead the first UK-based fundraising campaign for the Boys’ Centre; the highly successful ‘Aim High Appeal’.

Helen has over 18 years’ fundraising experience; five of which she spent with Save the Children, where her talents as a Corporate Fundraising Manager were first recognised by Starehe UK. Helen has spent the last ten years as a Fundraising Consultant, working for a wide variety of clients, including renowned charitable organisations such as Cass Business School, the British Library, NACRO and Help the Hospices, as well as smaller, developing charities such as Starehe UK.

She is delighted to be back for the duration of this Appeal, and to have such a talented and committed team working with her.

Lisa Robinson – Appeal Manager

Prior to joining Starehe UK, Lisa Robinson was a Corporate Partnerships Manager at the global environmental organisation WWF UK. She worked with well-known partners such as Canon and Fellowes and successfully developed new business relationships with The Cooperative Group and Ecover, among others.

Earlier in her career, Lisa worked for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign as a Corporate Fundraiser, brokering relationships with partners such as Virgin Atlantic’s Change for Children Appeal team, and securing Charity of the Year recognition with the recruitment agency Morgan Hunt.

Having graduated from Kings College with a BSc in Pharmacology, Lisa is now studying part-time at Birkbeck University for an MSc in International Business and Development. She is also an enthusiastic traveller, and once spent three and a half months travelling from Ethiopia to South Africa on an overland truck; something which tested her teamwork skills, stamina and (at times) her nerves. Starehe UK is happy to have her on board.

Lucy Fisher - Fundraising/Administrative Assistant

Lucy Fisher studied French and Spanish at the University of Manchester and has worked both as a teacher and as a Supporter Relations Coordinator for the wildlife charity WWF UK.
